What is a diversity initiative and why does it matter?
A diversity initiative is a deliberate effort by an organizational leadership team to prioritize diversity and create a more welcoming and inclusive workplace. Workplace diversity improves productivity, reduces turnover, and increases employee engagement by providing conditions that support creativity and individuality. A homogenous organization supports more of itself, often overtly or inadvertently suppressing perspectives that challenge the status quo.
Read The Wisdom of Crowds by James Suroweicki for a broad perspective on how diversity is a condition that supports innovation. Multiple perspectives bounce off of each other and help generate new ideas and new solutions. People need to feel like their differences, their individuality, is welcome at work. Welcoming all kinds of diversity (cognitive, gender, ability, sexual orientation, race, religion, age, etc.) helps people relax and feel comfortable enough to let down their guard and really engage in the workplace. This kind of inclusion makes people want to stay and do their best work.
Diversity and inclusion together create an environment that supports individual happiness, and there are mountains of research on happiness supports organizational health.
What is the difference between racism and prejudice?
Prejudice is a negative belief, conscious or unconscious, that individuals hold about groups of people. Anyone can hold and act on prejudiced beliefs. It is primarily a term to describe individual beliefs and actions.
Racism is the system of societal structures that were created in order to ensure that people of some races had more and better opportunities. Technically, racism refers to a system of laws and societally enforced norms and practices that privilege white people over people of color. Colloquially, however, many people use the term racism to describe interpersonal prejudice.
However, what is more important than arguments about terminology is the recognition of the difference between bias expressed at a personal level and institutionalized bias. The legacy of institutional racism, is a result of hundreds of years of preferential treatment given to one group over another, will take a long time to undo.
What is the difference between unconscious and implicit bias?
These terms are more or less interchangeable. The phenomenon they describe is how our thoughts and actions are often influenced by stereotypes in an unconscious, unintentional manner. Stereotypes about different groups are accumulated through our own experiences, the media, friends, family, and the culture around us. Those stereotyped messages don’t go in one ear and out the other. They get stored by the brain to use as mental shortcuts later. Through awareness and effort, we can learn to override these unconscious messages that affect our behavior.
